Battery storage in a new home, what to weigh up

Battery storage should be planned as part of the home's electrical and building design, even if the battery will not be installed immediately.

The early decisions are location, access, ventilation, switchboard capacity, cable routes, solar and inverter compatibility, backup circuits and the way the system will be maintained or replaced.

The final system design and installation must be completed by appropriately licensed electrical professionals in accordance with current Victorian requirements and applicable standards. Product and location rules change, so concept drawings should not lock in an unverified arrangement.

Decide what you want the battery to do

The electrical brief should begin with the outcome:

  • Increase use of rooftop solar
  • Reduce grid consumption at particular times
  • Provide backup during an outage
  • Support essential circuits only
  • Prepare for electric vehicles or future electrical load
  • Integrate with energy monitoring or automation

A system designed only around nominal battery capacity may not match the household's actual load profile or backup expectations.

Install now or provision for later

Both approaches can be sensible.

Install now

This suits clients who have selected the energy strategy, product and electrical design and are comfortable proceeding under current commercial and technical conditions.

The project can coordinate the complete system, including commissioning and client training.

Provision for later

This suits clients who want flexibility as technology, tariffs and products change.

Provision may include:

  • Reserving a compliant potential location
  • Providing cable routes or conduit
  • Allowing suitable switchboard space and capacity
  • Coordinating the solar and inverter strategy
  • Recording future access requirements
  • Identifying possible backup circuits

Provisioning does not guarantee that every future product can be installed in the reserved space. The arrangement still needs to be reassessed against the rules and product requirements at the time of installation.

Location needs specialist confirmation

A battery is not simply another appliance fixed to an available wall.

The electrical specialist needs to assess:

  • Applicable clearance and separation requirements
  • Protection from impact
  • Weather exposure
  • Temperature and ventilation
  • Proximity to doors, windows, habitable areas and escape paths
  • Access for installation, inspection and replacement
  • Relationship with the inverter, meter and switchboard
  • Manufacturer requirements
  • Fire and emergency considerations

Energy Safe Victoria states that battery systems must be installed and verified by appropriately licensed electrical practitioners under the current legal and technical framework.

The article should therefore avoid declaring that a garage, plant room or external wall is automatically compliant. Those locations may be suitable, but only after assessment.

Design the backup circuits

A battery does not necessarily power the entire home during an outage.

The client and electrical designer should decide which loads are important, for example:

  • Selected lighting
  • Refrigerator and freezer
  • Data and communications
  • Security
  • Garage or gate access
  • Selected power outlets
  • Essential pumps or controls

Large loads such as heating, cooling, cooking, pool equipment or vehicle charging may require a different design or may be excluded from backup.

The switchboard, protection and circuit arrangement must be designed accordingly.

Coordinate future electrical demand

New homes are carrying more electrical load through:

  • Induction cooking
  • Heat-pump hot water
  • Electric heating and cooling
  • Pool equipment
  • Electric vehicles
  • Home offices and data equipment

The electrical design should consider the combined strategy rather than treating solar, battery and vehicle charging as unrelated additions.

Access and replacement matter

Battery and inverter equipment will not last forever. The project needs a practical way to:

  • Inspect the system
  • Isolate it safely
  • Replace major components
  • Move equipment into and out of the location
  • Keep required labels and clearances visible

Do not create a technically impressive installation that can only be serviced by removing finished joinery or damaging the home.

Coordinate monitoring and automation

If the client wants the battery information within a broader control system, confirm:

  • What data the selected equipment exposes
  • Whether integration is local or cloud-based
  • Which party commissions the connection
  • What subscriptions or ongoing accounts apply
  • What happens if the platform changes

Energy information should remain accessible and understandable at handover.

Questions to ask the electrical team

  • What household load profile is the system designed around?
  • What solar and inverter arrangement is proposed?
  • Which circuits remain live during an outage?
  • Is the location compliant for the selected product?
  • How is impact, weather and heat managed?
  • Is the switchboard ready?
  • How will the system be isolated?
  • What access is required for replacement?
  • What certificates, commissioning records and training will be provided?
  • If the battery is deferred, what exactly is being installed now?
